SF Chronicle - Vacation Retreat Becomes Lanai Home

Written by Beth Hughes

Photography by Matthew Millman

For a San Francisco native raised in the chilly, foggy Avenues, something close to heaven appeared decades ago off the bow of the SS Lurline, a posh Matson line steamer on the San Francisco-to-Honolulu run.

Hawaii - sunny with beaches of white sand lapped by water so welcoming a boy could swim year-round. Both grandmothers might be San Francisco natives, but Hawaii was his special place, a revelation where warmth caressed his soul.

Thus began a lifelong love affair with the islands. Throughout marriage and a move to sunny, warm Marin County to raise three daughters, the visits to Hawaii continued. Hawaii was not only his place; it was their place, the place outside the Bay Area.

And as retirement approached, the stars aligned when the couple spotted an advertisement for oceanfront property on Lanai in the Wall Street Journal. "We'd been there, and we'd seen it," said the boy's wife, a Larkspur native, who, like her husband, prefers to remain anonymous to protect the family's privacy. "We knew it was hard to find property on the water, so we thought we'll go and see what they had."

The let's-check-it-out trip turned into a let's-write-a-check moment as the Pacific Ocean provided a sparkling backdrop for views of Kahoolawe and the Big Island.

That was 1997. Today, the kid describes himself and his wife as "grandparent-type people," and the couple's second home on Lanai epitomizes the easy, unforced fusion of indoor and outdoor, Eastern and Western sensibilities that are the hallmark of Hawaiian style.

Congratulations Holly!

Philpotts Interiors is honored to announce our senior designer Holly Boling Ruiz was nominated by Theremador’s top dealers in Hawaii and the Pacific Rim to participate in Thermador’s special Design Council that was formed just three years ago. This council gives their input and recommendations on Thermador’s new product designs and brand. The design counsel includes industry leaders from America, Germany and Turkey. Thermador has named 2013 the “Year of the Designer”.

The council took two-and-a-half days of intense brainstorming to review prototypes and design ideas for their 2015-2016 products. Council members were asked to comment on all design and parts of their appliances. You may view the profile of the council members at Thermador’s website.

Other lines of their product include Bosch, Siemens and Gaggenau.

Alii Tower Final Touches

As seen in the Star Advertiser

Turning a dark interior into a brighter space, this custom designed image was added to a lit mirror in the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Alii Lobby to mimic the presence of a window in a fully urbanized space.  Last minute changes allowed for this quick solution of applying etched film, rather than a traditional etched mirror, which was beyond the budget and time frame of the project.

Philpotts Interiors featured in the Fall 2012 Issue of LHQ

The Fall 2012 Issue of Luxury Home Quarterly features Philpotts Interiors and our work from Modern Perch and the Royal Hawaiian.

As a “trailblazing designer” in the 1960’s, Mary Philpotts McGrath, her mother and founder, focused on hospitality, resort, high-end residential and commercial projects throughout the U.S., Asia and the Pacific. Philpotts Interiors’ oeuvre includes such high profile projects as the newly renovated Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Hawaii Convention Center and Disney’s new resort at Ko Olina. In its production of immersive interiors, Philpotts has established itself as a translator of local culture attune with modern sensibilities on design and technology that create a true sense of place.

Sense and place individually help delineate what and how Philpotts designs. Philpotts-Miller says, “Design voices are fundamentally authentic when based on the origins of the environment versus some glorified themed concept. It is not to say that design is restricted by this foundation, but rooted there and watered so it grows out of its environment, where the beauty becomes a wonderful collective script unfolding through collaboration, courage and discipline.”

Mixing it up with John Robshaw!

In NYC I stopped in to John Robshaw. His talent, textiles and inspirations from India are great. Here, you’ll see patterns and textiles, new and antique all mixed up in various colors. The best part is that you don’t have to go to India to collect these colorful and exotic textiles. They’re right here in NYC and among retailers, including Honolulu’s own Place- a design atelier of Philpotts & Associates.

Mix it up! Robshaws fabrics mix various patterns and color combinations.

You can mix Robshaw’s styling with many other styles and interpretations. Just look at the inspiration of his headboards that mix in shapes and a bit of quirkiness!

Looking for the exotic escape with a mix of different cultures? Mix in furnishings from India!

Morocco can mix with Colonial, and even with the ‘pop’ of modern you’ll have an exotic, romantic and fresh contemporary style.

Try to reinvent tables and bureaus fresh in hot lacquer paints or tables that draw on the exotic, mix them all up with John Robshaw Textiles!
