"My design approach hasn't changed in nearly 50 years of practice," says Hawaii-based Mary Philpotts McGrath. "Using my clients' artistic sense and directives, I help them create a comfortable and expressive environment. Working together, we balance color, light, texture, furnishings and art in a way that's comfortable to them." A native of Oahu with a background in the fine arts, she got her start when she and a friend began doing residential interiors on the islands. Philpotts & Associates is now a multifaceted firm that designs residences, hotels and offices alike. One recent sideline is the creation of furniture, fabrics, carpets, architectural elements and accessories—all of which can be found at Place, her design atelier in Honolulu. "Some clients are now from the third generation and being serviced by our second generation—my children and protégés," she says proudly.
