Leading Residential Interior Designers

April 2006

Since its inception, Philpotts & Associates has abided by a credo of appropriateness and lasting value that has earned it an impeccable reputation. Pictured above from the left are Lowell Tom, ASID; Holly Boling Ruiz, ASID; Jon Staub; Marion Philpotts Miller, ASID; and Mary Philpotts McGrath, ASID. They work as a team to oversee all projects, along with other designers, project managers and architectural draftspersons. Special attention is paid to finishing touches such as the selection of art, accessories and plants. Hawaiian native and founder Mary Philpotts McGrath grew up surrounded by a rich landscape of island and ocean. She believes that stretching imaginations, seeking new resources, inventing new points of departure and building from new combinations leads to discovering fresh interpretations. Her book, Hawaii: A Sense of Place, reviews the last century of design in the Hawaiian islands and features archival photographs from the Bishop Museum and David Duncan Livingston's photos taken of the firm's residential projects. The Philpotts' philosophy, "to embrace a project location and work in collaboration with a client," is well-illustrated in the firm's work.
